Socks can be divided according to their purpose, which defines their cut, length, thickness and material used. These characteristics directly affect the comfort they provide in your shoes.
Basic overview of options:
1. By type of activity (Determination)
- Sporty and functional: They are anatomically shaped, often have a reinforced heel and toe, and compression elements for better blood circulation. They ensure maximum moisture wicking.
- Outdoor and hiking: Reinforced socks designed for demanding hikes. They are characterized by high durability, shock absorption and excellent thermoregulation properties (often Merino wool).
- Dress socks: Thin, smooth, and elegant socks without significant padding. Made from fine materials that look good while not taking up too much space in narrow dress shoes.
- For everyday wear: Versatile styles that combine breathability and comfort. Often made with a predominant proportion of cotton and a pinch of elastane for the right shape.
- Medical and compression: They have a special loose hem that does not restrict blood circulation, or graduated compression to prevent leg swelling.
2. According to the height of the hem
- Invisible (ballerinas): Extremely low socks that end below the edge of the shoe. They are ideal for sneakers, summer shoes or loafers.
- Ankle: Ends just above the ankle. Great for sports, running and casual wear.
- Classic (mid-calf): A common standard that covers the calf. Suitable for work, with regular pants and for colder days.
- Knee socks: They reach just below the knee. They are especially useful in the winter months or with high work and sports (e.g. ski) boots.
3. According to the materials used
- Cotton: A traditional material for everyday wear. It is comfortable, breathable and excellent at absorbing moisture.
- Bamboo fiber: A very soft material that is naturally antibacterial and excellent at wicking away sweat.
- Wool (Merino): Ideal for cold weather. It is warm even when wet and has excellent self-cleaning and antibacterial properties.
- Synthetics (polypropylene, polyester, polyamide): Quick-drying materials most often used in sports socks, which add flexibility and durability.
