How fine is sheep's wool? Fiber diameter and why it matters
Fiber diameter and why it really matters
When sheep wool is mentioned, many people immediately think of the question: “Does it bite?” The answer lies in one crucial parameter – the diameter of the fiber , which is measured in micrometers (µm). It is the fineness or coarseness of the individual fibers that determines whether the wool is pleasant to wear or, on the contrary, irritates the skin.
What does fiber diameter mean?
The fiber diameter indicates the thickness of a single hair of sheep's wool . For illustration:
a human hair has a diameter of approximately 60–80 µm ,
Sheep wool ranges from roughly 15 to 40 µm , depending on the breed of sheep and the processing method.
The thinner the fiber, the softer the wool is to the touch and the less irritating it is to the skin.
1 micron = 1 micrometer (µm) = 0.001 mm.

Why fine wool doesn't "bite"
The biting sensation is not caused by the wool being sharp, but by the fact that thicker fibers bend less when in contact with the skin . The thicker fibers press on nerve endings in the skin, which the brain interprets as an unpleasant pricking sensation.
On the other hand, fine wool with a low fiber diameter bends easily, does not irritate the skin and is significantly more comfortable. That is why fine Merino wool, for example, is among the most pleasant wool materials ever.
Whether wool will bite you or not is a personal question for each of us. Everyone has different sensitivities. But still, a blanket made of European merino is soft enough to snuggle up under in front of the TV and feel like you're in cotton wool.
An approximate overview of the fineness of sheep's wool
To give you a better idea, sheep's wool is often divided according to the diameter of the fiber:
up to 18 µm – extremely fine wool (luxury textiles, bottom layers)
18–22 µm – very fine wool (bodywear, functional underwear)
22–28 µm – medium-fine wool (sweaters, blankets, belts)
above 28 µm – coarser wool (insulation, mattresses, technical products)
However, this does not mean that coarser wool is of lower quality – it just serves a different purpose.
Why even a soft wave sometimes feels uncomfortable
The "biting" feeling may not always be caused by the diameter of the thread itself. The following may play a role:
poor workmanship,
residual dirt,
aggressive chemical treatment,
individual skin sensitivity.
However, high-quality processed sheep's wool with the right fineness is very well tolerated by most people.
How to choose sheep wool products
When choosing, it is a good idea to ask:
What purpose does the product serve?
Will it be in direct contact with the skin?
What is the user's sensitivity?
For belts, blankets, mattresses or top layers, medium-fine wool is often ideal, offering great insulation and durability. For bodywear, wool with a lower fiber diameter is more suitable.
