Basic types of suspension
The hanging method depends on the type of feeder and the environment available to you.
- On a tree branch (hanging feeders): Ideal for smaller house and tube feeders or suet balls. Use a sturdy string, chain or wire and hang the feeder from the end of a thinner branch. This will make it harder for cats and martens to reach.
- On a wall or beam: Using screws and a bracket, you can attach the feeder to a garden shed, shed or house facade. Choose a location that is free from drafts and strong winds.
- On a windowsill: Use special feeders with suction cups. For greater safety, it is recommended to secure the feeder with a string tied to the window frame.
Correct placement (Safety principles)
The main goal is to offer birds safe shelter and easy access.
- Distance from shelter: Place the feeder about 1 to 2 meters from bushes or trees. Birds have immediate shelter from predators, but predators cannot easily jump onto the feeder.
- Height above the ground: Hanging feeders should hang at least 1.5 meters above the ground to keep them out of reach of cats.
- Quiet location: The space should be protected from wind and distractions (e.g. busy roads or heavy traffic).
